Speech therapy helps patients improve their ability to communicate effectively and eat safely. Our speech therapists treat patients with a variety of speech, language, cognitive, voice and swallowing deficits that could be a result of a stroke, brain injury, cancer or other neurological illnesses.
These therapists also have specialized training in diagnostic testing (for example, modified barium swallow studies) for swallowing and voice disorders.
Conditions treated include:
- Aphasia
- Apraxia
- Dysarthria (difficulty articulating words)
- Stuttering
- Voice and vocal cord dysfunction
- Swallowing disorders
Specialty Services:
- Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES): an alternative to modified barium swallow studies (MBS) where a flexible endoscope (camera) is passed through a nostril to the back of the throat so a “birds-eye view” of the swallowing mechanism can be seen. This allows a speech therapist to diagnose swallowing problems. Locations: Texas Health Arlington Memorial, Texas Health Fort Worth
- Videostroboscopy: a small camera is placed at the back of the throat to visualize the vocal cords while making sounds which helps to diagnose weakness, paralysis or disease. Locations: Texas Health Arlington Memorial, Texas Health Fort Worth
